Thousands of people in the Philippine capital and nearby towns were marooned by flashfloods after the typhoon hit the main island of Luzon. Asia Pacific in Crisis Appeal

Funds are urgently needed for tens of thousands of children across the Asia Pacific region affected by the devastating typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis that have battered the area over the past few days. Thousands of people have been killed and millions more are homeless throughout the Philippines, Vietnam, Samoa and West Sumatra in Indonesia.

Your continued support of our Global Neighbours program has made a real difference to children’s lives throughout the world. Thank you.

Children are the most vulnerable in times of crisis and Save the Children has issued a global appeal for emergency funds for the current crisis in the Asia Pacific region. These funds will enable us to respond to children’s immediate humanitarian needs and initiate longer-term recovery programs.

Save the Children is mobilising staff and resources to provide humanitarian assistance to children and families in Western Sumatra, Indonesia where a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Padang on September 30.

According to early reports, the quake destroyed homes and buildings, cut communication and electricity, and damaged bridges in and around Padang, home to 900,000 people.

“Children and their families have been forced from their homes and into an extremely stressful and dangerous environment,” said Mike Penrose, Director Emergency Programs for Save the Children Australia. “We are currently sending teams to help and assist in their recovery”.

“Save the Children is providing assistance to support our partner organisations in the Samoan capital of Apia and we are in contact with our programs in the affected areas to get a sense of the extent of the damage, and the immediate needs,” he said.

Save the Children Australia is leading a major relief effort in the three worst affected provinces of Vietnam. Typhoon Ketsana which, struck the Philippines and Vietnam, has caused the worst flooding in decades. Millions of people have been affected, many losing their homes and belongings to the torrents of water that swept through their neighbourhoods and communities.

The next days and weeks will be crucial to children’s survival and well-being. They have endured a disaster on a scale they and their families have never seen before.

We need your help now to support children and families devasted by this crisis.

Across the Asia Pacific region, Save the Children expects to:

  • Deliver essential relief packages such as non-food items and shelter
  • Distribute food
  • Provide health and nutrition activities
  • Prioritise child protection work, including Child Friendly Spaces that provide a protective environment for children
  • Emergency education
  • Livelihood support to help families regain income and provide basic needs.

Thank you for your current support of Save the Children around the world. Any additional help you can provide for the Asia Pacific Crisis Appeal today will help children and their families in their time of need.

Yours sincerely

Pink Ribbon Day Money raised for Breast Cancer Research

Thank you to all our wonderful clients for your generous support. This year’s Pink Ribbon Day was on the 27th of October and we managed to raised $1000 from selling the Cancer Council Merchandise to the ladies in Mosman and Crows Nest, plus putting in our own share to make it a nice round sum. In addition, we donated vouchers for Pink Breakfast events ran by our own clients and it was wonderful to hear of their success as well!

Being a predominantly feminine oriented service business, we came across many people and our friends who are affected by breast cancer, either directly or indirectly, and we feel the need to take part in fighting this disease. We can’t wait to take part again next year for the Pink Ribbon Day 2009 and raise even more money for breast cancer research and cancer patient supports!

Ever heard of Eglantyne Jebb? Here’s an Inspirational Book Online or Offline!

With so much negative energy around during this financial and economic downturn, and the media isn’t helping the case either, by bombarding the mass with more fear using their huge paper-selling headlines, we spent our spare time on this inspirational book, Lessons In Leadership from a spinster in a brown cardigan. Take a look for yourself!

Lessons In Leadership

Lessons in leadership from a spinster in a brown cardigan is a unique book that innovatively uses the print and online mediums.

Want to know more about the history of Save the Children organisation? This is a place to start!

You could call it a biography, because it tells the remarkable story of Eglantyne Jebb ‘the unsung heroine’, founder of Save the Children, and one of the greatest leaders you’ve probably never heard of.

You could call it a picture book, because it uses striking illustrations and images. Or you could call it a motivational book, because it has been purposely written to inspire people. It sure has inspired many of us here. Enjoy!

Donate to Red Cross Australia for the China Sichuan Earthquake Appeal

During recent weeks, we have witnessed two natural catastrophes that have impacted hundreds of thousands of people. The earthquake in central China on May 12th and the cyclone in Myanmar on May 3rd have resulted in widespread destruction and loss of life. The statistics are just too enormous to comprehend and we rather not repeating them here.

Since these disasters struck, many of us have wonder how we ca help. It is true that only disasters bring true humanity out of us all. So why not help the Red Cross Australia now with this appeal.

Australian Red Cross actively responds to disasters and conflicts and provides assistance to vulnerable people in communities both at home and abroad. You can make a donation in various forms, or follow the link below to donate online.

World’s Greatest Shave - Leukaemia Foundation

Well, we were not game enough to go for the big SHAVE over the weekend but we have sponsored this kind young man named Brian.

Here are his thoughts on why he chose to take part!

Thank you everyone for your effort to read my email, and a very sincere thank you from the bottom of my heart to all those who have either sponsored me or made donation for the good cause of any type. I believed these monies would make a big different to both people suffering from the disease and people caring for those suffering.

Some people wondered either someone in the family or someone I know is suffering from the disease. The answer is no. No one in my family or people I know that suffered from leukaemia related disease. May be the arrival of my son is another motivation for me to take part. He arrived 5 weeks early and so has to stay in the Intensive Care Unit for ten days. During these 10 days, I saw some parents have to quit job to care for their child, and some have to find accommodation around the hospital to save hours of travelling.

Well done Brian!

BANGLADESH CYCLONE EMERGENCY APPEAL

Save The ChildrenSave the Children Australia is responding in Bangladesh following a devestating cyclone. Please find below some details regarding this campaign and join Manhattan Nails in supporting their works :

THE SITUATION

A super Category 4 storm, Tropical Cyclone Sidr hit Bangladesh on Thursday November 15, 2007. The storm (measuring 350 miles in diameter) first struck at Hiron Point in the Sundarbans area of the Kulna Division, immediately adjacent to Barisal where Save the Children has extensive programming.

An estimated 17 Districts from the Divisions of Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong were the most affected. Approximately 3 million people were evacuated prior to the cyclone reaching land.

“Many families have lost everything, including their homes and their crops, and they are struggling to survive,” said Save the Children US Bangladesh Country Director Kelly Stevenson. “We are appealing to the public to support our efforts to assist children and families affected by this disaster. We remain very concerned about possible outbreaks of cholera and severe diarrhea due to the lack of access to clean water.”

Save the Children was one of few humanitarian agencies with emergency responders positioned in the path of the storm, remote and low-lying areas still recovering from extreme flooding last summer. In coordination with local authorities Save the Children has dispatched 19 assessment teams to evaluate damages and needs.

WHY WE NEED YOU

Initial assessments of the affected areas show the crucial need for food and non-food items, clean drinking water and sanitation systems, and medical assistance in the prevention of disease outbreak. There are presently millions of affected people with immediate needs to be met.

As in most disasters, children have been severely affected by the effects of the cyclone. Many children have lost their homes and are now displaced, creating a sense of insecurity. Some may also have lost family members and friends. Schools and health centers have been damaged and destroyed, creating a need for education and health services and protective environments.

The Save the Children Alliance is aiming to raise US$5 million globally and we need your help now.

Please, give whatever you can, so that Save the Children can provide assistance in the form of supplies, shelter material, clean water, food, medical assistance and relief items.

Donate online now, download a donation form here or call us on 1800 76 00 11.

Thank you for your generosity!
